Game

A new Dev Jam came and went. And with it, a new console that a bunch of devs made a bunch of games for. This time it was the MSX, that classic Japanese computer with a bunch of games most Americans have never played or even heard of, but was absolutely HUGE in Japan. It’s an extremely important ecosystem, just like the PC88-98 is, but is largely ignored in the west. I first learned about the MSX from La-Mulana!

But despite that, not every MSX game is a classic that everyone remembers, OR some strange Japanese novelty. A lot of them are just arcade ports. Like this. Fun fact btw, this was dev’d by me. I did this :)

Game

Mr. Do’s Wild Ride is an arcade game from the early 80s about everyone’s second favorite clown, Mr. Do. He was pretty big back then, somehow, and he got a lot of games for someone who had a B-tier digdug clone. My favorite is Do Run Run, but my second favorite is this, Mr. Do’s Wild Ride. It’s nothing like any of the other games. You play as Mr. Do running from one end of a rollercoaster to another for some fucking reason. You need to time your movements and climbing in time with the cars flying past you.

If you get hit, Mr. Do goes flying wildly across the screen in a fun little jump scare. You can also collect cherries for bonus points. If you hold down the button, you use up your time to run extra fast, which can be good for getting past scary timings.

This version is okay. It’s not nearly as good as the arcade version, but come on, it’s the MSX. It’s missing a level, but it’s missing my least favorite level so that’s fine. It is what it is. There are worse arcade conversions out there, but it’s not like anyone would go back to this, except some fucking weirdo. Oh wait, I’m that weirdo.
