Retro Achievement Mastery 222 - The Preservation Project
Wahoo

I had just finished B3313, a romhack of Mario 64 designed to look and feel like a lost beta of the game. You’d THINK after 450 stars of B3313 I’d be done, but nah. I had heard about this and wanted to check it out.

The Preservation Project is a pretty overly designed name for what is just straight up a recreation of a Mario 64 beta. It’s a recreation of the Mario 64 spaceworld beta from images and video. That’s it. I gotta say, “The Preservation Project” is a sick-ass name, so I get why they called it that rather than just “Mario 64 Space World Beta Recreation”.

Is it accurate? I dunno, it sure looks pretty accurate. I was not in Kyoto in the mid 90s to check out the Spaceworld demos. It’s fun as a curiosity, at least. It takes about 20 minutes to see everything, which makes sense, it’s a demo to show stuff off, not an actual game. I always liked the vibes of early demo images. It’s weirdly empty and nostalgic in a way I can’t quite place. But I like lookin’ at em.
