LizstarTrek - Prodigy Season 2 Episodes 11 - 20

Every Sunday my Twitch subs and I watch Star Trek in my Discord. Here are my reviews and thoughts on each of the episodes as I see it. If you’re curious about a nerd’s views on Star Trek episodes, please read on, I go quite in depth with some of these episodes! I’ve watched some Star Trek before but not all of it!
This is an interesting one. Fully 3D animated, so the third animated Trek show, and Trek does quite well in animation, though it’s never been 3D. This one is ALSO… for kids! That’s not a bad thing. Some of the best shows of all time are for kids. I don’t expect this to be like, Avatar or Gravity Falls levels, but I expect this to be the real last bright spot in the Trek ouvre.
After season 1, I was quite impressed, so I’m also very ready for season 2! And considering how Paramount almost fucking killed it for no reason, I am even more intrigued. Cause I’ve seen what shit they let live.
Last Flight of the Protostar, Part I - PRO 4/10

During Chokie’s isolation on some planet, he’s been just…. catching fish, eating food, surviving, and whittling wooden figurines of his crew. For TEN YEARS. Only Chakotay would react like this. When he meets the others, he is not happy to meet them, and is a weird prick about everything. They explain to him exactly what happens and he refuses to accept it because he’s racist about Gwyn. Fucking dickhead. Hologram Janeway is here, though! And she kinda calls him out on it, but he ignores her too. Asshole. He EVENTUALLY takes pity on them as they’re about to die out in the rain, so he lets them in, but tells them again “YOU’RE NEVER GETTING MY SHIP OFF THIS PLANET”, but this time he clarifies it’s because he ejected the protostar and the warp cores so it literally cannot fly.
This sure does endeer me Chakotay, huh? Me after seven seasons of Voyager, being like “I sure do wish Chakotay had a personality.” The monkey paw curls.
Also Beltran is doing this really weird old man voice that I don’t really like at all.

They need to try and befriend him so they can actually figure out how to handle this. We get a little montage about this and now suddenly Chakotay cares about them a little bit. That’s…. kinda sudden.

Anyways, Dal gets caught by some kinda monster. They all go hunting for him in an ion storm, and find him in a cave. Inside the cave they find Adreek, Chakotay’s old XO who disappeared years ago trying to find a way off the planet. His skeleton is sitting in a bed of electric crystals. But he has a thing that has been gathering energy for a decade, which they’ll use to blast off. Chakotay is now perfectly cured of his Being A Dick Disease.
I feel like they went too far in both directions. He’s too angry for no reason and then too happy and friendly too fast. If they had made him utterly depressed that woulda been a lot better. But instead he’s like, aggressive.
Last Flight of the Protostar, Part II - PRO 6/10

Back on Voyager, Janeway is a bit worried she made the wrong decision by letting the cadets leave. To feel better she talks to Beverly, who uh…

Looks nothing like Beverly Crusher, though I WOULD like short hair Crusher. She basically has nothing useful to say, except “I sure do wish I had actually talked to my son in the past ten years. You’ve seen him more than I have. But he’s a good son.” You sure about that??? You SURE ABOUT THAT? I DONT’ THINK HE IS.
Now that Chokie is now longer a shithead, he’s bossing them around and Dal is having some growing pains about that. I thought he was supposed to have realized captaincy wasn’t for him?

They have to do some like, wind sailing on vapor seas in order to get to a storm and collect deuterium to blast off. Dal keeps fucking up so they basically put him on Antarctica Duty. Chokie sits down with him and talks him through his turmoil. “When I was your age, I also was bad with authority, and I was lost and unsure where I was going. So I became a terrorist.” Dal’s prolly thinking “holy shit at least I’m not THIS guy”. Anyways Chokie’s advice is “When you feel like you don’t belong, it’s best to find where you’re needed most”. Gee thanks dog.
Also Mejel is having trouble interracting with Zero. I think she doesn’t like their new body.

Chokie falls overboard, Dal jumps in to save him. They try to make a thing about this and while I DO like the “the kids are competent and he needs them like they need him”, I dunno if it lands 100%.
They make it to space. Now they need to get a protostar.
A Tribble Called Quest - PRO 5/10

You cannot call the episode that holy shit
…I can’t front, I fucking love it.
Anyways they go down to a planet to try and find some special element. When there, they immediately find some tribbles which are…. weirdly aggressive and angry. They have teeth. Tribbles don’t have teeth. They also seem to eat MEAT. They COMPLETELY obliterated the ecology of this planet.

They find a Klingon scientist who’s been trying to make a Tribble Genophage but he’s bad at his job and he fucked up, making them stronger instead. Rok immediately finds a good way to fix it and needs to synthesize it, so that they can get the element that’s in the tribble nest. She’s weirdly okay with making a genophage for such a cute little creature.
Zero hurts their leg, and it can’t fix cause of their weird physiology. Jankom works with them to build a new one! Meanwhile, Gwyn and Majel have a heart to heart. It’s nice that they’re letting her connect with everyone.

Rok accidentally fucks up and makes an abomination of nature. A tribble like creature that Dal calls Bribble, built out of Tribble DNA mixed wioth her sneezes. She is unhappy with her mistake of creation.
There’s some kind of theme in this episode about “you can make mistakes, that’s fine, what matters is what you do about them”, which is a good theme, but I dunno if it REALLY hits here. Anyways Gwyn and Dal end up needing being saved from tribbles, which ends in them ALL needing to be saved from Tribbles. But just as they’re about to be eaten, Bribble calls them off and communicates with them. All’s well that ends well, I guess.
They get back on board, make the protostar, and set a course for home.
Cracked Mirror - PRO 7/10

THey make it to Voyager, and are super excited to finally make it home! Hologram Janeway uses a laser pointer on Bribble. Cute. Also Gwyn’s time displacement device twitches.
Anyways whooips they’re on the wrong fucking Voyager. In this one, Janeway died going through the wormhole to save Chakotay. The device twitches, and then they go through the elevator to find… a broken down shitty garbage scow of a Voyager aaand they find Okona. They’re all bouncing between weird different timelines. Rok and Zero are now in a timeline with a “Captain Tuvix”. Jesus christ, they’re really stepping on that landmine.

They find out that, y’know how the fabric of time is weakened? Well, the Protostar punched a hole in it, and now they’re in new realities on each different deck. It’s tied to them cause they make it, or whatever.

They try and teleport to the deck they need to go to aaaand get to the Mirror Universe. This is the first real time we’ve seen Voyager Mirrors! I think we saw Mirror Tuvok in a game once, but that’s it. This really IS the worst universe, Chakotay and Janeway are a relationship. Anyways Murf beats the shit out of Mirror Chakotay.
Interesting lore here, this is the “New Terran Empire”, after all the DS9 Mirror Lore. Fascinating!
The Loom show up, and they have to team up with Mirror Janeway and Mirror Chokie in order to stop them and fix the time rift.

“Chakotay! Is that really you? …What is on your face?!” The reunion finally happens.
Ascension Part 1 - PRO 7.5/10

With everyone reunited, we clean up some loose ends. Majel introduces Dal to her old friends, and they get to at least a peace. I also like that they have one of Morn’s species here, and they go “Grom, no more chatter over comms”, even though she’s literally never spoken on screen. Keeping that old joke alive. The Doctor tells Zero they might be able to make them a new body.
And finally, they need to figure out how to send the Protostar back. But then, Admiral Jellico calls them back and shuts them out of the mission. Ahhhh, admirals. Why is Janeway the ONLY good admiral? He’s ALSO going to re-evaluate the Cadets. Just to be even more of an asshole. The cadets aren’t handling this super well, but for once Dal is the voice of calm, being like “we should be proud of what we’ve done”.
Before then can head home, Gwyn gets a message from her dad. He’s like “Ascensia got rid of the council and has made a fascist empire and is sending weapons to destroy you”. Oh boy, we get MORE ticking clock “the Federation is in trouble” nonsense. She sends a weapon to them. THey have no clue HOW she’s doing this, but like

Some weird evil ship comes, and declares war on the Federation. The Protostar crew heads back to the Protostar, on Chakotay’s orders. Most of them, at least. Dal has to team up with Alpha Squadron to save the day. Zero also is out of commission, helping the doctor.
Everyone works together to try and stop the big evil spike ship, buuuuut they fail. Shields down to 0%, all systems offline. Bad. And as Ascensia gloats, we find out where she got her new toys from… Wesley is stuck in some kind of pod and she’s syphoning energy out of him.
Fucking Wesley!
Wesley, ONCE AGAIN, being the reason a war started.
Ascension Part 2 - PRO 8/10

Starfleet forces are barely hanging on. Asencia taps into Crusher’s time magic and sees the future, which shows Voyager fucking exploding. “Oh I want that!” she says, as she tries to blow up Voyager. Dude, did you REALLY need time magic to show you that firing a bomb at Voyager would blow it up?

Okay, she didn’t actually fire a bomb. Instead, it’s like… it looks like a marker. When it finally blows up, it’s a slow expanding explosion that makes things Old. But you know who’s body doesn’t age the way organics’ do?

Zero basically does the end of Star Trek II and goes to shut down the bomb by themself and their body withers away.
Meanwhile, Nova Squadron is having trouble because the enemy knows Federation strategies, so they have to end up needing to be Weird. Majel has to think on her feet, which is hard for a Vulcan, but she does well. Unfortunately, the weapon Zero is turning off can’t be, it can only be set to another target. So they set it to Majel’s ship so they can throw it at Asencia’s ship.

They did it! Asencia’s ship blows the hell up.

They make Zero a new body, and this one has some sensory inputs. Not the same level, but it’s still a nice upgrade from their original body.
They get a new mission to go take the fight to Solum. Oh, NOW Jellico wants them back on the mission.
Brink - PRO 5/10

We get to see how Wesley was captured. He was being an idiot. The end.
Back in the present, Gwyn plans to go and sneak back onto Solum and meet with an uprising that’s brewing. She will take the rest of the crew with her, minus Majel sadly. They dress in early season 1 outfits.

Oh nevermind, Majel resigned so she could join them.
They sneak down to Solumn and use a little cloaking bubble Rok made. Wow that’s VERY illegal! Kinda wild how modern Trek just ignores cloak laws. They go to Ilthuran, Gwyn’s dad’s lab, and find someone has been using it even after he’s been captured. But who?

Meet Asencia. Not THAT Asencia, this is the younger Asencia, who is fucking disgusted by what her older self is doing and is currently leading the revolt, what with Gwyn’s dad being captured.
They split up. Dal, Pog, Asencia, and Majel sneak around and save Ilthuran. This is done VERY easily, as Majel just knocks out the guards. Meanwhile, the others sneak into a big facility to try and break Wesley out. We ALSO learn that he’s did this on PURPOSE so that Asencia would invent the wormhole tech they needed. Don’t worry, Wesley is NOT an idiot, this was entirely on purpose. But uh oh, he was like “WAit, you SPLIT UP?! I Told you to STICK TOGETHER!” “We thought you meant like, teamwork!” “NO I MEANT LITERALLY”. YOU SHOULDA SAID THAT DUDE. Now he has no idea how this is going to end.
Anyways they’re all immediately recaptured. Man Wesley, you suck.
With quick thinking on Dal’s part, they manage to sneak Wesley and Ilthuran out. So uh, the kids are gonna fix Wesley’s fuck ups huh?
Touch of Grey - PRO 7/10

Touch of gay. touches you
Interestingly, it’s gray with an e. So this is not American.
Anyways Wesley is now shut down fully, he has lost all his powers and is no longer a Traveler. MEanwhile, Asencia sends a message going “HEY JANEWAY I HAVE YOUR KIDS. COME DOWN OR THEY FUCKING DIE.” So Janeway sets up an away team. It’s all the most important Old People. Janeway, Doctor, Chokie, and for some reason Wesley. Here to fuck up more shit, or start more wars.

Meanwhile, Asencia takes the kids to a big arena and has them fight a Loom creature, which she somehow caught, and intends to erase them from the timeline. That won’t have MASSIVE reprecussions. This thing is still the most horrifying monster in Trek, which is wild in a series that also has SNW Gorn. Honestly I’d rather die in any other way. This is kind of like a Shadow Realm kinda situation, they invented a way to bloodlessly kill and its WAY WORSE.
Janeway tries to give herself to Asencia as a bargaining chip. Asencia just decides to fucking kill her, blasting her away with a gun. She then is super dramatic about it… yeah, it’s the Doctor pretending to be Janeway. That’s cute.
They blow the things up, releasing the Loom, who immediately jumps to Asencia, but instead of killing her it kills her guards and runs away. Why? So the climactic battle can happen. Fair enough. And then Asencia gets a note that Ilthuran has started a civil war.
The crew manages to escape, and they’re SUPPOSED To leave, but nope. Janeway’s goin’ rogue. AGAIN.
Ouroboros Part 1 - PRO 7.5/10

In respond to people rising up angry at her, she decides to just launch every weapon against the Federation, opening a bunch of wormholes and possibly ripping apart spacetime.
The crew plans a strategy to try and stop this nonsense. They need to send the Protostar back, and that involves going down to the planet and using Asencia’s technology to create a specific wormhole. And Voyager is the only ship in the quadrant (take a drink) so it flies around the giant spiky ships going through the wormholes and attacks them, which is wild since ONCE of these ships almost blew up the Protostar AND Voyager.

Dal, Jankom, and Murf are climbing up to a giant tundery tower while Asencia and Gwyn fight on the side of it. Well, Murf has to have a big badass fight with an asshole robot. It’s mostly Dal climbing to the top so he can connect some conduits and open the wormhole.
There’s a lot of big exciting moments, lots of people almost falling and dying, but they manage to do it. This closes the other wormholes on top of the evil ships, and the day is saved.

All of the people of Solum go “Gwyndala, our will is your’s” and give her some energy so she can defeat Asencia. I mean……. y’all coulda just walked over and beaten her up with her, but okay, Gwyndala looks badass like this.
We did it, we won, and there are no more bad guys who could possibly- oh fuck right, the Loom exist.
Ouroboros Part 2 - PRO 5d/10

The Loom are pouring out of the wormhole, and they need to go through them in order to send the Protostar back.
Also Wesley teases possibly having sequel seasons to this. lol. lmao.
Voyager escorts the Protostart to the wormhole, and they make it.

They make it through, and the timeline is fixing itself. Only one problem. The Janeway Holoprogram is uh, going to die again, and lose all memory of this. But they manage to use the Doctor to help make a backup. I mean, she’s not REALLY the same one from season 1, that one is dead, but I guess she’s fully back with us for good, that’s nice. And then they leave the Protostart the way they found it, as it goes off to crash on Tars Lamora.
We then get a little clip show of scenes of them on the Protostar. Alright y’all, I saw the show, I don’t gotta watch it again. Still gives a LITTLE bit of feels, I guess.
Anyways back to the present, the Loom just turn around and dip. Please ignore all the people they killed. We don’t even know how MANY they did, cause of the way it works. “Congrats everyone, we saved all four people living on Solum!”
We get a montage of everyone.
Wesley ACTUALLY SHOWS UP TO SAY HI TO CRUSHER. Jesus Christ. Finally, Wesley. He also meets Jack Crusher. Doctor finishing his new holo novel. Chakotay goes back to being captain. And Janeway retires from Starfleet, to a nice quiet house in the countryside. Dude she’s only like, 60. Bones was 160 when he retired.
It’s all nice, happy, and sweet.

Anyways and then Mars 9/11 from Picard season 1 happens. Jesus fucking christ. Fucking mother fuck. Why.
We are still suffering from the sins of our past.
“It’ll be hard to do anything without our synth slave labor”.
Janeway is dragged out of retirement so she can yell at them that they’re being fucking idiots about all this. The Federation is going isolationist :) Yay. Why did they have to put this into THIS show? This has nothing to do with it at all.
So the Protostar 2.0 they were making gets shelved cause Isolationist Federation isn’t doing any more exploration. But for some reason, Janeway then uh, pulls in a few favors and has them all put on board the protostar 2.0 as field commissioned ensigns? This makes no sense, y’all. I don’t get it at all.
Like, all the stuff with them going off and doing their own mission of exploration is good. They all get their own ship and it’s cool. Dal says he’s not captain material but he’ll be a good XO for…

Captain Gwyn. It’s a good ending. Minus the weird Mars 9/11 nonsense????? It feels tacked on awkwardly? Probably some bullshit Paramount forced through. Over all though, the show is good! Good characters, writing, and story. Like obviously the Cataclysm shit is exhausting, but that’s fine. I liked it! Would have loved for this to get more! Instead of Discovery season fucking 5, which is next week.
