Retro Achievement Mastery 233 - Pokemon Red Glitch Showcase

Yes, I AM uploading three of these in one day. The faster I get through Pokemon February the better.

So yeah, I did Pokemon Red and then for some fucking reason IMMEDIATELY did it again, but this time I did the glitch showcase. So Retro Achievements has “subsets”, which basically sequester out the weird-ass achievements to their own sets. Around this time they had actually implemented the ability to play subsets at the same time as the main set, which was kinda why I jumped on Pokemon to test it out. But this wasn’t the best one for that, cause I wasn’t doing shit like this in the main game.

There are only 8 achievements in this set, and every one of them involves intensive glitching. I did a crash course on Pokemon gen 1 glitches for this, most of which I already knew, but some I needed a bit of a refresher. It’s always fun to do stuff like this, so let’s go into detail, since there’s only 8.

#1: Escaping the Simulation

Use the invisible PC in Celadon

In Celadon there’s a hotel that uses the same layout as a Pokemon center. When they copy and pasted the map, they removed the PC, but did not remove the invisible event tile. Whoopsies! I used to do this as a kid, it’s silly.

#2: Ya Dun Goofed

Find a way to crash the game

Extremely easy to do, honestly. You will probably do this one by accident while trying to do the following one.

#3: Speedrun?

Enter the Hall of Fame with 1 minute or less on the clock

I usually hate speedrun achievements. But for subsets, they’re fine, and for this one, it’s not really “hard” and very interesting. So, there’s a way to beat the game in less than a minute through Arbitrary Code Execution, or ACE. Basically the idea is you glitch the Pokemon and Item menus so you can pick up and drag code in the game around to where you want it to go, and that will activate the end game sequence. If you’re following a guide, it’s extremely easy to do, and if you want to do it fast, it takes the tiniest amount of memorization and will take you like 3 tries at most.

If you fuck it up you crash the game, so hey, that makes the previous achievement free!

#4: No Experience Necessary

Get the Pokemon in your first party slot from level 1 to level 100 in one battle

This one seems pretty wtf, but it’s not that bad if you get a glitched Pokemon through the Mew Glitch, which I’ll explain later on.

#5: Rare Candy Addiction

Stockpile 255 Rare Candies

The Missingno glitch is one of the most well known glitches of all time. You almost certainly know about it. If you talk to the old man, then fly to Cinnebar, and swim against the right side, it will summon glitch pokemon. One of these will increase the items in your 6th bag slot by 128. Simply have one rare candy there, glitch, then throw 2, then glitch again, and boom, you have 255. I’ve done this dozens of times honestly.

#6: Ruining the Neighborhood

Enter Glitch City by breaking the Safari Zone

Another one I did as a kid, this one is fun. To do this one, follow these instructions:

Go into the Safari Zone, pay the 500 to enter. Once you enter, turn back around and leave, then refuse to actually leave and re-enter. Once you’ve re-entered, turn back around and once again the attendant will ask you if you REALLY want to leave. Say no again. Then, save the game and restart the console.

When you start the game back up, try and leave again. This time, the attendant will NOT ask you if you want to leave, but instead if you want to enter. Refuse, and leave. Then go to any other map, walk around for the 500 steps, and boom, you’re in Glitch City.

It’s a real neat glitch. Just fly away to fix it.

#6: The Third Starter Wasn’t Alone

Defeat Professor Oak while he has the starter neither you nor your rival chose

In the game data is an unused trainer battle against Professor Oak in which he uses the unused starter evolution. This is a very high level trainer battle, higher than the champion, and seems like it was gonna be a cool bonus boss, but was sadly cut from the game. But we don’t have to put up with that.

The Mew Glitch is a very famous and very important glitch. By flying away at the same time you enter into a trainer’s field of view, you will enter a glitched state. If you then encounter a Pokemon as the most recent Pokemon you’ve seen, when you return to that original trainer’s location, you will get into a wild battle against a Pokemon based on that Pokemon’s stats.

If you get a Pokemon with a special stat of exactly 226, you can encounter a ditto. Then, growl at it either 4 times for Charizard, 5 times for Venusaur, or 6 times for Blastoise. Then, return to the original trainer, and boom. Professor Oak.

This FEELS like a super intensive and complex glitch, and it’s certainly more so than the old man glitch, but it’s really shockingly easy to do. And if you know how to this glitch, you can….

#8: Catch ‘Em All - For Real This Time

The implied sentence below this one is “without using the link cable”, because that is not allowed.

So yeah. Some Pokemon are not in this game. AND you’ll need to get Mew! What to do?! Well obviously, Mew Glitch. If you have that map, those special stats, and a lot of free time, you can do anything. ANYTHING.

So yeah, that’s a crash course on Pokemon gen 1 glitches. This is missing a lot of the other easier glitches, like using a Pokedoll to skip the ghost tower, but that’s fine. It’s just a crash course. I find this kinda thing really fun to do, honestly. And hey, now you can easily do it, too!
